IRS Announces First 2016 Attempted Data Breach

By Marc Lovell posted Wed February 10,2016 04:38 PM

Last week, on February 3, the IRS indicated a computer failure temporarily precluded acceptance of returns. (We wondered here at the office what was up –it seemed like an IRS shutdown). Much of the website was not up and running. Apparently, only some “repairs” were needed.  But yesterday, the first big IRS security breach attempt of 2016 was announced. Identity thieves were pursuing E-file PINs.  Out of the 464,000 SSNs used by thieves, nearly one-quarter allowed thieves successful access to an E-file PIN.
