Annual Ethics Tune-Up and Research Training

When:  Jun 6, 2017 from 03:00 PM to 05:00 PM (ET)

Practicing law today requires a constant balancing of case management, legal research, administration, marketing, finance and more -- all while remaining mindful of a lawyer’s ethical duties and responsibilities. This is a two-part program addressing both ethics and research in a single session.

Part one of the program is designed to provide a comprehensive overview or “tune up” for many recent changes in Massachusetts ethics rules since 2015.

Part two of the program will be a research training session on Fastcase -- one of the largest online legal research libraries. Massachusetts Bar Association members have FREE and unlimited access to Fastcase, which provides users with coverage from state and federal courts, state statutes and administrative regulations, as well as court rules, constitutions and other valuable libraries. It is used by more than 800,000 subscribers, including 28 state bar associations and many of the nation's largest law firms.

The panelists will discuss specific issues including:

  • Part I
    • An overview of key changes to ethics rules
    • Areas of legal practice that are prone to generate malpractice claims
    • The major causes for malpractice claims
    • Effective risk management strategies to avoid malpractice claims
  • Part II
    • What the Fastcase member benefit is and how you can access it
    • How you find a case and what you can do with it
    • How to construct and run a search
    • How to sort a results list to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of your searching
    • Fastcase special features that offer you some perspective on your research project, including Forecite, the Interactive Timeline and the Bad Law Bot
    • A review of statute searching vs. case searching. Is it pretty much the same thing?
    • Information on batch printing of statutes and annotations
    • Mobile access
