Crossing Borders: Unaccompanied Immigrant Children and the Role of Counsel

When:  Jan 8, 2015 from 03:00 PM to 04:00 PM (ET)

In the summer of 2014, a surge of unaccompanied immigrant children from Central America were stopped at the southern border of the United States. Many of these children were reunited with family or placed in foster care in Massachusetts, and must still navigate a complicated federal immigration system to defend against deportation. Many of these children are also involved in state juvenile and probate proceedings concerning custody, child welfare and delinquency.

Join us to learn more about what brings these children to Massachusetts and the unique legal issues they and their caretakers face. This discussion will cover:

  • The basics of special immigrant juvenile status under federal immigration law.
  • The role of counsel representing unaccompanied immigrant children in state and federal proceedings.
