The
guest speaker will be Attorney
James
M. Kennedy,
from Portland, Oregon, a member of the national network Lawyers for a
Sustainable Future (LSF), which was formed to encourage leadership and
involvement within the legal profession in creating a sustainable future. LSF
was inspired by Oregon Lawyers for a Sustainable Future, a
statewide initiative of lawyers, which was formed in
2006.
LSF believes the legal profession has both a responsibility and an
opportunity to contribute in substantial and varied ways to the societal
endeavor to create a sustainable future. This opportunity includes, but goes
well beyond, the practice of law, the operation of a law office, and drafting
legislation.
A widely accepted definition of sustainable development, contained in the
1989 Brundtland Report commissioned by the U.N., informs the work of LSF:
"Development which meets the needs of current generations without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs."
LSF is a resource for American lawyers, law offices, law schools, bar
associations, and other organizations of lawyers, which seek to expand the role
of the legal profession in the sustainability movement.
