charges to eventually come to an end, for non-citizens, those consequences can
be life-changing and permanent. A panel of experienced professionals on the
front line of this crucial issue will offer practical advice from the
perspective of a prosecutor, defense attorney, immigration attorney and judge.
Panelists will address key issues and best practices for representing
non-citizens in the criminal justice system, including but not limited to:
- How to identify immigration pitfalls and advocate for resolutions
that keep families together, both in pre- and post-conviction
settings.
- A prosecutor's perspective on responding to
Padilla and 29D motions.
- The techniques and constraints with which immigration
counsel must contend when representing non-citizens facing criminal charges.
- Practical tips and insight from a leading trial court justice on effective
advocacy for prosecutors and defense counsel on post-conviction matters and
other issues unique to non-citizens involved in criminal courts as defendants,
victims and witnesses.
