Join us on Monday, December 15th from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. for a brown bag luncheon on “HIPAA Compliance 101 for Solo Practitioners.” Kathryn Sylvia, Nixon Peabody LLP, and MBA Health Law Section Council Member, will be presenting, together with Linn Foster Freedman, the Leader of Nixon Peabody’s Privacy and Protection Group.
Attorneys, accountants, and other professional advisors receive, maintain, transmit, and store the protected health information of their clients in order to provide counsel or other services. They’re now required to comply with the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules that govern health information. There are serious monetary penalties for failing to comply as of September 23, 2013.
Join us for a nuts-and-bolts review of the HIPAA standards applicable to attorneys and their law practice. This discussion offers a practical guide for understanding the Omnibus Rule and its requirements, as well as heightened compliance standards and increased enforcement. Key issues that will be discussed include:
• Requirements of the Privacy and Security Rules for attorneys
• Business associate agreements
• New breach notification standards
• Enforcement for non-compliance
• Suggested compliance measures and tips for solo practitioners
