This FREE seminar and reception will present a panel of judges discussing practice tips and recommendations for success in preparing for and arguing appeals before the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and the Massachusetts Appeals Court. The seminar will provide valuable insights for both new attorneys and seasoned litigators, and attendees will be given an opportunity to pose questions to the panel. The seminar will be followed by a networking reception for all attendees and members of the judiciary.
Specific topics will include:
• The role of briefing and oral argument• Practice tips: from preparation of briefs and record appendix to having a successful oral argument• How judges prepare for argument• Frequently made, and sometimes fatal, missteps by counsel• How appellate panels decide the cases before them• The role of amicus briefs• Published vs. unpublished opinions
