HUMAN TRAFFICKING – Who Are The Real Victims?

May 21, 2013     4-6 pm

MBA, 20 West Street, Boston

On November 21, 2011, Governor Patrick signed H. 3808, "An Act Relative to the Commercial Exploitation of People" into law. The law went into effect February 19, 2012.

As part of this anti-human trafficking law, the Legislature created the Human Trafficking Task Force to address all aspects of human trafficking through policy changes. The task force is charged with addressing Human Trafficking through service development, demand reduction, system change, public awareness, and training. Other members of the task force include state and community agencies.

This program will focus on "Demand" and will examine ways to curtail the demand side of trafficking including self-sustaining first offender diversion programs. The guest speaker is Michael Shively, Ph. D., Senior Associate/Scientist at Abt Associates, who serves on the Commonwealth's Human Trafficking Task Force Demand Reduction Subcommittee.

In October 2008 the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) awarded a grant to Abt Associates Inc. to conduct a study, entitled A National Assessment of Sex Trafficking Demand Reduction Efforts. The project was designed to develop a descriptive overview of antidemand tactics employed throughout the United States and to provide practitioners with actionable information to assist them in starting, improving, or sustaining initiatives.

To share what has been learned, the project has generated several key products, one of which is the present report, A National Overview of Prostitution and Sex Trafficking Demand Reduction Efforts, which summarizes the research activities and presents findings.

This program will address how a focus on demand reduction will change the application of law in Massachusetts.

You are invited to attend this free program sponsored by the MBA’s Individual Rights and Responsibilities Section.  To R.S.V.P., Human Trafficking or jstevens@massbar.org.  Due to limited space, register now.
